In many frequent verbs, the stem vowel changes in the present: pienso, duermo, pido, and juego.

Seguir has e → i and also adds g in yo: sigo. Its other forms follow the expected pattern: sigues, sigue, seguimos, siguen.

The nosotros form keeps the stem’s original vowel: pensamos, dormimos, pedimos, and jugamos.

The best way to notice the pattern is to compare a changing form with nosotros: puedo / podemos, pienso / pensamos, duermo / dormimos.

Pensamos is not a less important form or a different tense. It is simply the nosotros conjugation in the present.

Pretérito: cambios especiales

Preterite: special changes

The present does not automatically determine the preterite. Some -ir verbs change only in third person; others change spelling to preserve the sound.

Dormir changes o → u in durmió and durmieron. Pedir, seguir, and repetir change e → i in pidió, siguió, and repitió, as well as their plural forms.

In these -ir verbs’ preterite, yo, tú, and nosotros keep the original vowel: dormí, dormiste, dormimos; pedí, pediste, pedimos.

Spelling to preserve the sound

Empezar changes z → c before e: empecé. Jugar changes g → gu before e: jugué. These are spelling changes, not the present stem-change pattern.

Imperfect: habit and background

The imperfect describes what was habitual or the background of a story. Here the stems return to their original vowel: dormía, pedía, repetía.

Do not carry over the present change

Although I say duermo in the present, I say dormía in the imperfect. Although I say pido, I say pedía. Memorize the whole tense, not one fixed stem for every tense.

Completed event vs. habit

The preterite views an event as completed; the imperfect shows a habit or background. Ayer pidió comida presents a complete action. Normalmente pedía comida shows a routine.

Practice one verb with hoy, ayer, and normalmente or de niño. This makes you choose the tense by meaning instead of by word-for-word translation.
