Diez verbos esenciales: presente, pretérito e imperfecto

Ten essential verbs: present, preterite, and imperfect

I do, I did, I used to do…

Build a solid foundation with ten frequent verbs in three tenses and learn to distinguish a completed action from a past habit or background.

01

Presente: hábitos y hechos

Present: habits and facts

The present describes what you do, know, want, or see now and what you do regularly.

Rutina o situación actual

Routine or current situation

Use the present for habits, general facts, and actions happening in this period. In Mexico, use ustedes for the plural you; you do not need vosotros.

Pretérito: acciones terminadas

Preterite: completed actions

The preterite presents an event as complete and bounded: it happened, ended, or produced a result.

Evento completo

Completed event

Use the preterite when you can view the event as a finished unit. Ayer, anoche, and la semana pasada often appear with it, but meaning comes first.

completed time frame + preterite verb + complement
Memory cueA finish line: I did, went/was, had.
Ayer hice mi tarea.
Show English translation

Yesterday I did my homework.
