Para: hacia una meta
Think of para as pointing toward a destination, recipient, purpose, or deadline.
Para quién
Use para to name the person who receives or benefits from something.
something + es para + personThis coffee is for you.
I bought a gift for my mom.
Para qué y para cuándo
Use para to connect an action with its goal or with an expected deadline.
para + infinitive / para + timeI study in order to speak with my family in Mexico.
The homework is due tomorrow.
Dirección o destino previsto
Para can mark the direction or intended destination of a trip.
I am heading downtown.
Voy al centro is also natural; para emphasizes the direction or intended destination.We are leaving for Guadalajara early.
Por: el vínculo o el contexto
Think of por as connecting an action with its cause, route, duration, or exchange.
Razón o causa
Use por to explain what caused something or why it happened.
I arrived late because of traffic.
Thank you for helping me.
Intercambio o precio
Use por for what you give, pay, or receive in exchange.
amount + por + itemI will give you twenty pesos for the coffee.
I traded my shift for Ana's.
Ruta y duración
Por can also show a route taken or how long an action lasted.
