Voy a llegar tarde communicates a change clearly. You can soften it with perdón or disculpa before explaining.

I am going to arrive a few minutes late, but I already left.
Pide ayuda y repara la conversación
When directions come too quickly, do not guess. Ask for a short, specific repetition.

Perdón, no entendí is direct but polite. Add ¿me puede repetir? to ask for help without breaking the flow.

Can you tell me which way the metro exits?
Por dónde / por la calle
Por helps you talk about a route or path: which way you exit, which street you follow, or where you pass through.

Go straight along this street.

Repeating a direction in your own words prevents errors and shows the plan is still moving.

Entonces summarizes what you understood. ¿Verdad? gives the other person an easy opportunity to correct you.

Voy para + place points to your immediate destination. It is a natural way to confirm where you are headed.
Perfect, I am headed to the North exit.
